Lily Ana Philbrook
More about Lily Ana Philbrook.
I am so excited to start in N.C. State's PhD program in Sociology this August, 2025! With my research interests and aim to utilize mixed-methods research, I am eager to start bringing value to NCSU's program, and practice applied research to help us all better understand and serve North Carolinian communities.
My passion in life is learning, writing, and research. So while my main focus is sociological research, with the goals of becoming a research professional in the non-profit industry and a professor, I have recently been holding contract jobs as a freelance research and editorial assistant for different kinds of projects - ranging from sociological to environmental research areas (click here to see more about a couple of the projects I have worked on in the "Research and Editorial Assistant" page).

I invite you to take a closer look at my resume and personal statement to learn more about my research experience, key skills, and professional and academic career goals. Additionally, at the very bottom of this page you can learn some fun facts about me!

Fun facts about me!

1 / I love art - whether it be consuming it or creating it.
I believe we have a duty to cherish and protect the beauty this world has to offer, and of course, as a sociologist, I can't help but appreciate being able to view others' perspectives via different artistic mediums. Everyone has a story to tell, and art is the best way - it has the power to transcend time and socio-cultural barriers.
As for creating art, I have always enjoyed writing (fiction and poetry), but I am especially drawn to crocheting wearable art at the moment.
2 / I enjoy traveling and exploring as much as I can.
One of my favorite trips as an adult so far has been going to Iceland, but my favorite trip I went on as a child was to Hondarribia, a small ocean town in the Basque region of Spain.
3 / I have many hobbies and enjoy the thrill of trying new things often.
Some hobbies of mine include: crafting (crocheting, knitting, sewing, scrapbooking/making collages); reading; writing; idea-generation; snowboarding; hiking; gardening; fishing; cooking and baking (especially gluten-free and vegan goods); taking courses online and learning about different statistical and data presentation software, as well as business-oriented courses about best-practices and leadership; engaging in different forms of movement (traditional strength training, yoga, dancing, etc).
4 / I find peace and passion in anything to do with nature.
Gardening, hiking, environmentalism, environmental justice, etc. I grew up surrounded by flowers, fruits, vegetables, chickens, and understanding the importance of environmental sustainability and conservation. In fact, one of my favorite electives I took as an undergraduate was environmental Sociology!
